Eloping in Western Australia, somewhere around Bunbury, the South West or Perth, is far simpler than most couples expect. There is no marriage licence to chase and no blood tests. There is really only one piece of paperwork that matters, and once that is sorted, the rest is just turning up and getting married.
Here is the legal side laid out plainly, so you know exactly what you need before the day.

To be legally married in Australia, you need five things. None of them are complicated.
That is the whole list. The rest of this page walks through each one.
This is the one that matters most. The Notice of Intended Marriage, or NOIM, is the form that tells the government you intend to marry. Without it lodged correctly, your ceremony can still go ahead, but it will not be a legal marriage.
The timing is the part to watch. The NOIM has to be in your celebrant's hands at least one calendar month before your wedding date, and no more than 18 months before. So if you want to marry on 1 March, your celebrant needs it by 1 February at the latest.
One thing couples often get wrong: the month is counted from when your celebrant receives the form, not from when you sign it. Signing it and leaving it in a drawer does not start the clock. Get it to your celebrant early.
Short on time? In limited circumstances a shortening of time can be granted, but only by a prescribed authority, not your celebrant. Best to plan ahead and avoid needing it.
You do not lodge the NOIM with Births, Deaths and Marriages yourself. It goes to your celebrant, who handles the rest after the ceremony. You can download the form from the Attorney-General's Department website, or your celebrant will provide one.

You need an authorised marriage celebrant to perform the ceremony and lodge your paperwork. Book them early, because they are the ones who receive your NOIM and they need to be available well before the day, not just on it.
Most couples sort their celebrant first, then complete the NOIM together with them, which means you have someone checking the form is filled in correctly. Errors on the NOIM can flow through to your marriage certificate later, and fixing those is a hassle, so having the celebrant guide you through it is worth doing.
If you need a celebrant for the South West or Perth, the Recommended Wedding Suppliers page lists ones worth contacting.

Australian law requires two witnesses aged 18 or over to be present at the ceremony and sign the marriage paperwork. For a big wedding this is never an issue, there are plenty of people around. For an elopement, where it might be just the two of you and the celebrant, it is the one thing couples forget to arrange.
If you are eloping and do not have anyone to fill the role, I am happy to sign as a witness for your ceremony. Just let me know ahead of time so it is sorted before the day rather than scrambling on the morning of.

Your celebrant needs to confirm who you are and where and when you were born. For each of you, that means one of the following:
If either of you has been married before, you also need evidence the previous marriage has ended, a divorce order or, if your former spouse has passed away, a death certificate. Your celebrant will sight all of this before the marriage can go ahead.
Marriage in Australia has been open to all couples since December 2017, and the legal process is identical no matter who is marrying. Same paperwork, same requirements, same day. Everyone is welcome here.

Once the legal side is handled, the fun part is choosing where. Margaret River, Dunsborough and Yallingup are popular for the vineyards, beaches and forest. Bunbury and Busselton work well if you want something closer to home. The South West has no shortage of spots that make a beautiful backdrop for a small ceremony. If you want a hand thinking through the day itself, the Elopement & Micro Wedding page covers packages, timing and what an intimate ceremony looks like.

This is a general guide to point you in the right direction, not legal advice. Your celebrant is the authority on the paperwork for your specific situation, so always confirm the details with them.
